Changes in food allergy and sensitisation over a decade: two birth cohorts from the same geographical area

چکیده
Background Prevalence of food allergy is considered to be increasing with some even suggesting a food allergy epidemic. We aimed to look at the changes in reported symptoms of food allergy and food allergen sensitisation over a 10 year period in the same geographical area. We compared the prevalence of reported food allergy and food allergen sensitisation in 9-10 year old children between the Isle of Wight (IoW) birth cohort and Food Allergy and Intolerance Research (FAIR) cohort.

Changing prevalence of wheeze, rhinitis and allergic sensitisation in late childhood: findings from 2 Isle of Wight birth cohorts 12 years apart.
BACKGROUND While the prevalence of asthma in children is decreasing or remaining the same, time trends in the prevalence of rhinitis in children are not known. Understanding sensitisation trends may help inform about trends in asthma and rhinitis prevalence. OBJECTIVE To assess time trends of wheeze, rhinitis and aero-allergen sensitisation prevalence at 10 years of age, we compared two birth...
متن کاملEarly life Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) values as a predictor of food allergy and sensitisation at 2 years: results from the BASELINE Study
Rationale Food Allergy is a growing public health concern. There is observational evidence that exposure to food allergens across a disrupted skin barrier can lead to food sensitisation (FS) and food allergy (FA). This mechanism of action has subsequently been proven in murine studies. We sought to ascertain whether a non invasive measurement of skin barrier function at 3 time points in early i...
متن کاملSensitization profiles in polysensitized patients from a restricted geographical area: further lessons from multiplexed component resolved diagnosis.
BACKGROUND The micro-array techniques for the detection of specific IgE has improved the diagnostic procedures for allergic diseases. This method also allows to define sensitisation profiles from an epidemiological point of view. We studied the sensitisation pattern in a population of polysensitized patients with respiratory allergy, living in a restricted geographical area in the north-west It...
متن کاملDiagnostic and therapeutic approaches in respiratory allergy are different depending on the profile of aeroallergen sensitisation.
BACKGROUND There are few studies which analyse the characteristics of allergic respiratory disease according to profiles of sensitisation to different allergens. This study describes the clinical features and therapeutic approaches, according to the sensitisation profile to relevant aeroallergens, in a sample of adult patients with a first-time diagnosis of respiratory allergy (rhinitis and/or ...
متن کاملTime trends in the prevalence of peanut allergy: three cohorts of children from the same geographical location in the UK.
BACKGROUND This article investigated the prevalence of peanut allergy in three cohorts of children born in the same geographical location, Isle of Wight, UK and seeks to determine whether the prevalence of peanut allergy has changed between 1994 and 2004. METHODS Three cohorts of children (age 3-4 years) born on the Isle of Wight, were assessed for peanut allergy and the outcomes compared: Co...
